Shooting an Elephant

Do you agree with Orwell's rationalization that under the circumstances he had no choice but "to shoot the elephant" (para. 7)?

This is an opinion question. I think Orwell had little choice in the matter. He represented the outside force with power. He had the only gun in the village and the people, though they might not have liked him, looked to the power of the British for protection.
