What were the prisoner's attitudes toward the "story" of the gas chamber?

When the women arrive at Auschwitz, they see the smoke and believe the stories to be true. The women, of course, were meant to join Schindler at the Brinnlitz Factory. When he learns they've been sent to Auschwitz he leaves the factory immediately.
