Why do you think the poet asks for the unforgiving minute to be filled with 60 seconds worth of distance run? From poem "If".

A minute isn't a very long time which is why every second counts; a minute is unforgiving in that way, it is like a "long distance run."  After a minute is up, it is gone forever.
