What is the meaning of this Shakespeare quote: "A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life."?

This is in the prologue to the play. The chorus tells us that this play is about two lovers, their destinies were not supposed to be together, take their own lives. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy so we know the ending before the play begins. Shakespeare is interested in oh the characters meet their demise.
