Mama is scared that they will be attacked or even killed over the boycott. On Thursday, when they are supposed to get back, it begins to rain. Mama is so worried that she considers going out on the horse to look for them, but the wagon arrives. Mr. Morrison carries Papa into the house, his leg splinted with a shotgun and a rag tied around his bleeding head. Mama sends the unwilling children to bed while she prepares to set Papa's broken leg.

There appears to be trouble before they even leave for Vicksburg. The farmers do not want Papa to buy items in Vicksburg, and the plan to shop there and do business there is troublesome to the Wallaces. Mama believes the Wallaces will be "riled" and obviously thinks they will try to hurt Papa and his party.
