Racism is a main theme in the novel. The children attend an all black school, and their only textbooks are old books passed down from the white school. Books so old, they're no longer accurate. Mrs. Logan is fired from her job for teaching the truth about history..... the Logan farm is at risk, the family is humiliated...... Cassie is forced to defer to Lillian Jean...... their friends are targets of the Klan.
