Cassie's grandfather, Paul Edward, was born a slave two years before the Civil War.He worked extremely hard in a time when blacks in the South were treated even worse than during Cassie's life. Slave days were still entrenched in Southern culture. This combined with the humiliation of losing the Civil war made things harder for blacks like grandpa. Despite all his barriers Grandpa Logan was able to actually buy land that had belonged to Granger, he had bought it in 1887 when the Grangers had to sell in order to pay their taxes. Blacks owning land was virtually unheard of.
