Papa tries to took like an upstanding citizen in public life. In private life, he is an angry, cruel , and selfish man. I think Papa simply feels this works for him. He is able to get away with unleashing his cruelty in private.

Papa's Eugene private life is where he is acts as an Authoritarian figure trying to reinforce his family's own thoughts and opinions, forcing Catholic ideologies into them. In his public life, he also acts as a powering figure, being the publisher in the Standard and the main financial donator for the St.Agnes church, but in a more 'positive' way. His intentions sprouts from wanting to hold power, being a God figure and feeling the glory of being suprior to people he notes as 'pagans', and this also applies in his own household but in a more violent way.
