This question calls for your opinion, there is no right or wrong answer. I find Tom's end to be just, not because he was considered Driscoll's property, but because he was his murderer. Wilson is finally seen for what he is..... a bright, heroic, modern man, who single-handedly proves the Italian brothers innocent of Driscoll's murder.

On the other hand, we also have to consider Roxy and Thomas à Becket Driscoll's fates. Roxy is cared for, but she is sad and miserable. All of her hopes for her son sail away with the "sale" of her son as a slave. The "true" heir, however, is also sad and out of place. He is isolated and unprepared for the life thrust upon him, and he yearns for the life he left behind.
