Roxy is a complicated character. She certainly straddles issues of race, gender stereotype, and motherhood. She also has layered complexities regarding her wit, sexuality, morality, and conscience. I do not think we can blame Roxy or even Tom for their situation. They lived in a time that forced certain character traits onto people for survival. The best thing we can say about Roxy is that she was human with an abundance of frailties and strengths that make her such a complex and entertaining character.
