Pride and Prejudice

"Without thinking highly either of men or of matrimony, marriage had always been her object; it was the only honorable provision for well educated young women of small fortune and, however uncertain of giving happiness...."

Why would charlotte choose to "secure" a husband instead of growing to be an old maid?

In Pride and Prejudice, many women (such as Charlotte) must marry solely for the sake of financial security.
