The narrator was incensed by the eye and ultimately he killed the Old Man because of his hatred of that eye.

Apparently the old man's "evil eye" caused the narrator much distress. He felt the eye was watching him, judging him. The narrator felt the eye was so horrible that he had good cause to destroy it.
