Fortunato was cocky when it came to paintings and knowledge about gems. He also took too much pride in his knowledge about wine. His own conceit made him easy prey to Montresor's manipulations. Montresor’s feigned flattery and passive aggressive suggestions draws Fortunato to his doom.
