Romantic elements are often linked with the pastoral (nature). There are plenty of images like this here, "The old brown thorn-trees break in two high over Cummen Strand"... "For the wet winds are blowing out of the clinging air”. Most of the poem is like this. Cathleen, the daughter of Houlihan seems a modern reference to Irish nationalist thought.
