The symbolism in Book III begins with the narrator's request that he be filled with the light of God in order to tell his story in a way that's both persuasive and accurate. The lack of this "light" directly pertains to the absence of God in Hell and beside Satan. Satan deceives the angels into allowing to move amidst the light in this new world of Earth; he travels to the top of Mt. Niphates, which will also be the place where he carries Jesus for temptation in Paradise Lost.
