Our Nig: Or, Sketches From the Life of a Free Black

Legacy and honors

Since Gates' work in 1982, Wilson has been recognized as the first African American to publish a novel in the United States. The Harriet Wilson Project commissioned a statue of Wilson in 2006—sculpted by Fern Cunningham, the statue is located in Bicentennial Park in Milford, New Hampshire.[19] A historical marker on the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire honoring Wilson was unveiled in Milford on May 20, 2023.[20][21]
