How does McMurphy's attack on the orderlies advance the conflict of the novel?

McMurphy's attack is an attack on the system and shows that the system which has been so "calm" (the way they try to keep the patients) can be challenged. Sadly though it makes the orderlies and Nurse Ratched decide he needs to be controlled.
