While in the war, Bromden used a fog machine to reduce visibilty during the threat of attack. The fog on the ward used to terrify him to the point he'd end up getting shock therapy. Thus, he came to the conclusion he'd be better off if he remained quiet instead of yelling...... and simply lose himself in the quiet. It was safer that way.
