2. What do you think are the motivating factors behind the attitudes and actions of the main characters in the story?

I think the family wants the illusion of complete safety. Complete safety does not exist. The world is a chaotic place and walls cannot keep danger away. The parents have issues of security and stability which they seem to project onto keeping their home "safe".
