Why is Candy so bold in his defense of his dream when Curley's wife continually puts down the idea?

Candy has nothing to lose and everything to gain.... the dream is his future, the farm.... a place where he can contribute.... belong. For Candy, the future hinges on the dream, it provides him with hope, and he isn't going to allow Curley's wife to bring him down.
