Why does Steinbeck make Crooks so fixated on convincing Lennie that his/their dream of getting land/a farm is “nuts?” (Chapter 4)

Crooks is a broken man, both physically and emotionally. He feels alone in his misery and feels better if others felt as bad as he does. He doesn't believe dreams come true and wants others to share in his pain.
