Why does Slim treat George as he does in the end of, "Of Mice and Men."

At the end Slim treats George a certain way. How does he treat him and why?

Slim understands the relationship between George and Lennie, and the fact that George would be devastated by the act he felt responsible to perform. Slim acted as a friend, as well someone capable of sympathy.
