What kind of silence is settled in on the men on page 48 quote below ?

"It was silent outside. Carlson's footsteps died away. The silence came into the room. And the silence lasted. George chuckle…" page 48 on edition published by penguin books.

I would say this was a silence of discomfiture. Calrson just took Candy's dog away to shoot him....... there was nothing to say. The people in the room were uncomfortable and quiet.
