Many of the main characters are outsiders. Lennie is slow, Candy is old and maimed, and Crooks is black with a bent spine. His spine adds another level of meaning to being an outcast on the ranch. He is forever bent in front of white people who control his life.

It may symbolize the crooked American society and show that the system i sprejudice towards the black man.
