Talking about the dream reminds Lennie and George of hope and purpose. The dream allows them to continue in the very lonely life of the transient worker. They think that a place of belonging and purpose is within their grasp. Candy feels lonely and isolated. He is drawn to the sense of place that their dream farm provides.
