I would pick the ending when Slim knows what George has had to do to Lennie. Slim doesn't give George up and in fact comforts George in his difficult decision to kill his friend,

Slim twitched George's elbow. "Come on, George. Me an' you'll go in an' get a drink."George let himself be helped to his feet. "Yeah, a drink." Slim said, "You hadda, George. I swear you hadda.....

Here we see almost kindred spirits, friends who understand each other in a very lonely place.
