The scene reminds us that there is a point where everyone and everything has served its usefulness. Candy's dog used to be an efficient sheepdog, but now old and blind, iy is just a burden and a nuisance.

Candy is sensitive as he reslises that he is moving close to a similar position as his dog. As he only has oner hand, he is no great use on the farm, and his ageing frame will not be able to clean out the bunkhouse forever.
