Of Mice and Men

At the end of chapter 6, what effect does the arrival of Curley and the other men have on this scene?

(This is the part right after lennie has been shot)

There is a sense of sadness and relief. Curley and the other men would have tortured Lennie before killing him. George was able to spare Lennie this but at the expense of his best friend.
