No Country for Old Men (2007 Film) Character List

Anton Chigurh

Chigurh is entirely immoral, and quite possibly amoral in that he does not seem to take any responsibility whatsoever for his actions or their consequences. He stops at nothing to get what he wants and people are merely obstacles obstructing his path. He kills easily and violently. He is a professional assassin and so the act of taking a life has been reduced to a "job" and he is completely disconnected from this.

Chigurh would like to think that everything in life is pre-determined and that it is fate that decides whether someone lives or dies, not him. This is evident in his habit of flipping a coin to decide whether someone lives or dies; he refuses to take responsibility for the outcome.

Llewelyn Moss

A strange combination of good and bad, Moss is simultaneously a man who endangers the lives of his family so that he can keep money that does not belong to him, and a man who realizes that the injured Mexican criminals he found in the desert are dying and so courageously returns to the scene to give them water. He is completely out of his depth in his efforts to outwit Chigurh. He is smart enough to realize that he needs a strategy but a little slow in making one. He is able to quite easily outwit the Mexicans who are chasing him but he is no match for Chigurh. He does come through for his family and he hides them (he believes) from harm but he has completely underestimated the lengths that Chigurh will go to in order to kill somebody.

Tom Bell

Bell is an older-style sheriff who is feeling out-matched by the new, more violent criminals in his town. Although it has always been a violent and dangerous place, he is now unable to protect the town from men like Chigurh and is also feeling helpless because the line between good guys and bad guys is increasingly blurred; now there are bad guys and more bad guys and he does not know which he should be working with against the other.

Bell believes in the law and the power of the law to protect but is unable to use this power to protect against men like Chigurh.

Carson Wells

Wells is also pursuing Moss; he has been hired to find him and bring home the two million dollars, but unlike Chigurh he is in no hurry, and has no plans, to kill Moss. He is focused on bringing back the prize. He is also no match for Chigurh and is ultimately killed by him.

Carla Jean Moss

Moss's wife is actually a very courageous and feisty lady. She is the main victim of the events that unfold after her husband finds a briefcase full of money. She is a loving daughter and the Moss's have a happy marriage. She is initially put into hiding by her husband but when it becomes apparent that Chigurh will find her anyway she returns to her own home. She is traumatized when she sees her husband dead in the parking lot and is really made a victim of Chigurh twice.
