Moshe the Beadle is a teacher, and yet no one listens to him. Opening the novel with a respected member of the community and revealing the way people responded to things they couldn't comprehend shows us how quickly the Nazis were able to take the people...... particularly as they were all in a state of perpetual disbelief.
