The story progressively dives into Hell after chapter one. After all the dead children, humiliation and burning corpses, the story takes on more ideological struggles. Elie struggles with his faith and his God. He also struggles with questions that he previously would have thought abhorred. He considers leaving his father and just taking care of himself. He reconsiders the value of life and the merits of living in a world that would let this happen in the first place.
