Never Let Me Go

What events cause Tommy and Kathy (and to a lesser extent the other children) to begin thinking about the circumstances of their lives as “donors” and questioning the significance of certain aspects of life at Hailsham?

I can't recall what part of the book in which this happens, but I do know its somewhere near the end of part 1 or start of part 2?? Someone please help me thanks
