Blindness is portrayed in the novel as a sort of terrible outcome of the vicious circularity of racism. Mrs. Dalton is blind, symbolizing the blindness of whites in regards to the humanity of black people. At the end of the story, Bigger even seems to realize that he is blind to the individual character of whites--viewing them as a monolithic army of oppression.
