Douglass witnessed a brutal beating inflicted upon his aunt. The beating left the skin on her back raw and torn. His aunt also fell in a fore as a child and was unable to use her hands because they'd been burned so badly. Her beating may have been caused by her inability to work, as her hands were useless.
