Douglass was separated from his mother soon after birth, as was common practice. Removing the infants from their mothers severed family bonds. His mother (Harriet) dies when he was seven, her death did not effect him, as he hardly knew her. The only memories he has of his mother came from late night visits after she traveled many miles to see him (I believe it was a twelve mile walk).
