Douglass' goal was to share information about his childhood, as well as the difficulties he faced as a slave. He was to expose the malevolent nature of slavery..... the abuse, and the debasement. Douglass also wishes to humanize the slaves, who were falesely depicted as unintelligent..... less than human. In essence, he wished to challenge the preconceived notions held by Americans and reveal the true nature of those held in bondage.
