Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass

The use of "as if" in Frederick Douglass Narrative?

In the Preface (page 9) there is one paragraph where he uses "as if". What does "as if" mean? What is another word that can be used for "as if" instead?

In context, "as if" means that a possible explanation appears to be the case when it is not.

"As though" might also be used in place of "as if".
