When Douglass arrived at Master Hugh's home, his wife wasn't an experienced slaveholder. In fact, she was completely ignorant of the ways of plantations. Thus, when Douglass first arrived, she was kind, generous, and even started teaching him to read.... only to be berated by her husband for her actions. After Master Hugh took her to task, she withdrew her affections and kindness, eventually becoming a mean and bitter taskmaster. Slavery.... ownership.... and power over others changed her.
