Douglass frequently used the word "brutalize" in connection with slavery. The term "brutalize" went beyond the common understanding of treating people badly; it became a term of transformation. People would be transformed in acts of brutality. The souls of both the perpetrator and the victim are forever changed through brutal acts. The humanity is sucked out of both of them.
