Douglass would never have become the inspiration that he is had he not been a slave. Of course no amount of inspiration is worth the hell that Douglas and other slaves went through. Your quote however speaks to the adversity that Douglass overcame. Because of his intelligence and will to survive, he became a symbol of freedom for African Americans.
