What is the effect of writing in the perspective of a middle aged man looking back on his childhood?

Much like Scout in the classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird, David has the advantage of hindsight. Being a middle aged man gives him the maturity and experience to evaluate his younger years with sober reflection. This, in part, makes him a reliable narrator.
