Egeus believed that his daughter should do exactly as he says and never go against any of his "commands." Egeus wants Hermia to marry Demetrius, but she refuses to do what her father says. She wants to marry Lysander because she loves him. When she refuses his order, he turns her in to face the consequences of Athenian law which is enforced by Theseus.
