Merchant of Venice

What rumour does Salerio hear (when talking to a French man) and what might this foreshadow?

I need the answer including a quote for evidence, for a school project.

The Frenchman tells Salerio that an Italian ship was lost between France and England. This foreshadows Shylock's ability to collect on Antonio's promise.... the pound of flesh. Antonio's venture would have left him penniless if lost.

"I reasoned with a Frenchman yesterday,

Who told me, in the narrow seas that part

The French and English, there miscarried

A vessel of our country richly fraught.

I thought upon Antonio when he told me,

And wished in silence that it were not his."
