What is the connection between Antonio's losses and the situation he finds himself in with Skylock?

Bassanio, an aristocrat who has lost all of his money, comes and asks Antonio to loan him some money. Antonio puts up a bond indebted to Shylock in order to for Bassanio to woo Portia. When Antonio's trading ships sink, he is forced to pay back the bond to Shylock.
