Why can't Jack kill the pig trapped in the creepers? What does he vow?

Jack is unable to stab the pig because he was not yet ready to experience the blood and take the life of another creature. 

"Becase of the enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh; because of the unbearable blood."
