Jack's behavior at the meeting called in Chapter 2 gives the reader the first sign that things might go badly. In addition to the bloodlust that he begins to show for pig hunting, he plunges his knife into the tree trunk, which strikes a nerve in the group. It's the first indication that human nature will soon rear its ugly head amongst the boys.
