A war was responsible for their plane getting shot down so it is ironic that a war vessel should pick the boys up. The captain’s comment of "fun and games” is ironic because that is what boys generally do when they play. The captain, however, notices the condition of the boys says what they were doing was everything except fun and games. These boys have been through a self-inflicted Hell.
