Piggy, grabbing the conch from Ralph, reprimands Jack for "hindering Ralph." He says that the most important thing is that nobody knows where they are and that they may be there a long time. The boys fall into an anxious silence but then dismiss Piggy as an outsider worthy of rebuke. Piggy is fat, has asthma, and knows logical things the other boys do not. Most of the boys do not respect Piggy. In a Darwinian world of survival of the fittest, Piggy is deemed the least fit.
