Initially the boys call a meeting with the conch. The boys are scattered about the island. Piggy sees the creamy shell and suggests that Ralph blow it to call the boys. At the meeting they settle on a leader (Ralph) with Jack as the leader of the hunters. They look for fresh water, check if they are in fact on an island. They start a fire with piggy's glasses. This ensures cooking, warmth, light and a sense of security. They also attempt shelters. All of his runs smoothly at first but breaks down as the novel goes on.
