Jack embraces the dark side of human nature and Ralph embraces a more egalitarian side. Jack is motivated by power and violence while Ralph wants these boys to survive. Unfortunately, Jack is more effective in swaying the boys to his side. Jack appeals to the boys' primal urges while Ralph appeals to their rapidly disappearing sense of responsibility. Jack is arguably more effective than Ralph because he is good at manipulating the boys by using fear and reward.
